How and why did you start running and how many years have you been running?
I started running in 6th grade as part of the Woodford County Cross Country Team and continued running throughout Middle and High School. Some of my best memories and best friends were made running on the cross country course or through town. I have been running off and on since high school but have been taking things a little more seriously since 2020. That year I made a goal of running 500 miles, and surpassed it by September, and then in 2021, I made a goal of running 1000 miles and barely finished in late December. My wife and I had our first child in 2022, so my training and mileage have been less since then, believe it or not.
Why did you decide to do the Polar Bear Grand Prix?
My father was a really good runner in the late 80's/early 90's but got injured and had to step away from the sport. He recently picked running back up and we both ran another race in the fall during which he got first in his age group. He signed up for the Polar Bear Grand Prix and invited me to do the same. Unfortunately his injury flared up again and he wasn't able to compete. I went ahead and signed up for the Grand Prix anyway. Having a race to train for is a great way to keep motivated, especially in the winter months when it's tough to get yourself out the door.
Favorite distance?
I have always enjoyed the 5K. Its short enough that you can push the pace or tough it out (depending on the day) and its a distance that doesn't take a serious toll on your body. The final race of the Grand Prix, the 4 miler, was great too, though. It was my first race of that distance; it was fun to do a race that still felt fast but with a little more grit.
Favorite place to run?
Anywhere new. If I had to choose a place near home, it would have to be the breezeway/bikelane on Castlewood Avenue that connects Barret with Tyler Park.
Favorite or most unique race you have run?
In August of 2020, I did my first trail race, a 10 mile run. There may have only been 3 runners in the category, due to pandemic restrictions, but I had a blast pushing myself and tromping through the woods.
Favorite thing about running?
My favorite thing about running is being outside, and seeing nature or the city. Keeping in shape and challenging myself to improve are two other benefits.
Do you have any running/walking advice you'd like to offer?
I would encourage anyone to set concrete running goals for themselves. I find its the best way to keep motivated and improve.
Why do you like running River City Races events?
The Polar Bear Grand Prix races were my first with River City Races but definitely won't be my last. It was fun to run in somewhat smaller races, against other runners in the community, and to get to compete with many of the same people each race.
Anything else you'd like to share?
When I'm not running my legs, I'm running my mouth. My other hobby is hosting a history podcast called 202 Decades of Western History. While not directly related to running, I do mention the Marathon.
